URL shortening, What is it?

February 9, 2010 |  by S@R0Z

URL shortening is a technique on the World Wide Web where a provider makes a web page available under a very short URL in addition to the original address.

Over the past 10 years since world wide web became popular, there are millions of domains registered and tons of content published online. Some of the WWW analysts say:

it is very hard or impossible to invent anything, which still has not been tried already somewhere over the world

– but that’s not the truth.

The Internet is a huge place where new and innovative ideas may become world wide popular with relatively small investment. In this article I am going to present a relatively new service over the Internet, born of the online users’ necessity and that is “URL Shortening”. What this do is very simple but extremely efficient – an innovative way of turning a long URL into the shorter one.

Some Advantages:

  • Avoid URL Garbling
  • Use the Small Address space
  • Easy Link to the visitors

Some widely used URL shortening Sites:

1. TinyURL – www.tinyurl.com is the fist shortening service to discover this nice. Unfortunately later this year they faced their biggest fear, Twitter previously using it for their default shortener switched to Bit.Ly

2. Bit.ly – www.bit.ly is the most famous URL shortening service today, although not the first one offering this kind of service.

Some Other Sites

3. http://tweetburner.com/

4. http://snipurl.com/

5. http://tr.im/

6. http://zi.ma/

Example:

This link: http://www.designgala.com/simplefolio-free-wordpress-theme/ can be shortened into: http://tinyurl.com/yfajqnr or http://bit.ly/9iwHk6/
